How does SEO work?

Direct answer

SEO works in layers: crawling and indexing get a page into the system, content and structure explain what the page answers, and links plus trust signals decide if it deserves to rank above competitors. Search engines also weigh user satisfaction — do people click, stay, and stop searching after landing on your page. Weakness in any single layer caps the whole result, which is why a technically perfect page with thin content still underperforms.

The four layers

First, a crawler needs access. If the page is blocked, buried, broken, rendered only through fragile JavaScript or canonicalized incorrectly, the rest of the work does not matter. Crawlability is not glamorous, but it is the floor.

Second, the engine needs meaning. Titles, headings, body copy, schema, internal anchors and surrounding pages all help define the topic. This is where sloppy sites lose: the page says "solutions" and "growth" but never answers the actual query.

Ranking is comparison

Third, the engine compares. It looks at whether your page satisfies the query better than the pages already ranking. Better does not always mean longer. It can mean more direct, more current, more specific, easier to quote, or backed by better first-hand proof.

Fourth, trust decides close races. Backlinks still matter, but they are not alone. Brand mentions, author credibility, reviews, citations, structured organization data and consistent entity information all help the engine decide whether the page is safe to show.

AI did not remove the process

AI answers use retrieval and summarization, but they still need sources. That means pages must be easy to parse and cite. A clean definition, a table, a step-by-step block and a named author often travel better into AI answers than a long essay with no extractable structure.

So the practical workflow is simple: make pages discoverable, make answers clear, connect the cluster with internal links, prove authority, then measure what changed. SEO is not one switch. It is a set of small signals made consistent.

My working checklist

  • Check indexability first.
  • Match the page to one primary intent.
  • Compare against the current SERP, not against your opinion.
  • Add proof and internal links before expecting trust.
