AEO stands for Answer Engine Optimization — the practice of structuring content so AI systems like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI Overviews can extract, quote, and cite it directly as an answer. Traditional SEO earns visibility in search results; AEO earns inclusion inside the answer itself. It requires clear question-based structure, direct answers up front, and content that's easy for a language model to parse and trust without needing your whole page.
Where the Term Comes From
AEO isn't a rebrand of SEO. It grew out of a real shift: people stopped clicking ten blue links and started asking ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google's AI Overview a question and getting an answer with no click required. AEO is the response to that — optimizing so your business is the source behind that answer, not invisible to it.
The term picked up traction because marketers needed a name for a new goal. Ranking #1 in Google means nothing if an AI just summarizes five competitors and skips you. AEO reframes the target: get quoted, get cited, get mentioned by name inside the answer itself.
What AEO Actually Involves
In practice AEO means writing content that answers a specific question in the first sentence, structuring pages around real user questions instead of keyword themes, and making sure facts about your business are consistent everywhere online — your site, directories, reviews, social profiles. Language models pull from all of it.
It also means technical work most sites skip: schema markup, clean HTML structure, FAQ formatting, and making sure a crawler can actually read your content without JavaScript getting in the way. AEO fails quietly if the technical foundation isn't there.
AEO vs SEO in One Sentence
SEO optimizes for a search engine's ranking algorithm; AEO optimizes for a language model's answer-generation process — the inputs are related but the output you're chasing is different.
You don't replace SEO with AEO. You run both, because Google still sends traffic and AI answer engines are increasingly where the first impression happens before someone ever visits a website.
