What is local SEO?

Direct answer

Local SEO is optimizing a business to show up for searches with local intent — Google Maps, the local pack, and "service near me" queries. It relies on a well-managed Google Business Profile, reviews, correct categories, consistent citations, location-specific pages, and locally relevant backlinks. The target isn't generic traffic volume; it's nearby people who can actually walk in, call, or book, which makes local SEO one of the highest-ROI channels for physical or service businesses.

What makes local SEO different

Local SEO is proximity plus relevance plus trust. A strong website helps, but Google Business Profile often decides whether a business appears in the map pack. The profile needs correct categories, services, photos, opening hours, description, products where relevant and consistent contact details.

The site still matters. Service pages, location pages, embedded maps, local proof, reviews, schema and internal links help Google understand what the business does and where it operates. If the profile says one thing and the site says another, the signal gets messy.

The review layer

Reviews affect trust and conversion. I do not recommend fake review campaigns or gating. The better process is steady, honest review collection after real service moments, plus calm replies to both positive and negative reviews. A negative review handled well can build more trust than a page of suspicious five-star text.

Citations still help when they are consistent. Name, address, phone, website and category should match across important directories. The goal is not to submit to every directory on earth. It is to remove confusion from the places Google and customers may check.

Local SEO and AI search

AI tools increasingly answer local questions too. They pull from structured profiles, websites, reviews, lists and third-party mentions. That means local SEO foundations also support AI visibility: clear service areas, strong reviews, consistent entity data and pages that answer local buying questions.

For a service business, local SEO is often the highest-intent channel available. The searcher is not researching abstract theory. They want someone near them who looks credible.

My working checklist

  • Complete Google Business Profile.
  • Keep NAP data consistent.
  • Build service and location pages.
  • Collect reviews steadily and reply like a human.
