What is the difference between AEO and GEO?

Direct answer

AEO optimizes for answer engines that give short, direct responses to specific questions — think ChatGPT answering 'what's the best CRM for small teams.' GEO optimizes for generative engines producing longer, synthesized content — think an AI writing a full comparison article or research summary that references your brand as one of several sources. AEO is about being the answer; GEO is about being a trusted input woven into a broader generated narrative. They overlap but aren't identical.

Different Outputs, Different Targets

AEO targets short, direct-answer formats: a featured snippet, a voice assistant response, a one-line answer inside ChatGPT. The win condition is being quoted verbatim or named as the single source.

GEO targets longer generative output: an AI writing a full buying guide, a comparison, a research summary. The win condition is being referenced as one credible input among several, shaping the narrative even if you're not quoted directly.

Overlapping Tactics, Different Emphasis

Both rely on structured, factual, well-attributed content, and both require your business information to be accurate and consistent across the web. That overlap is why people conflate the terms constantly.

The emphasis differs though. AEO leans harder on precise, extractable one-line answers and schema. GEO leans harder on depth, credibility signals, original data, and being the kind of source a model chooses to synthesize from when building a longer answer.

Why the Distinction Matters Practically

If you sell a simple service with clear factual questions ('how much does X cost'), AEO work delivers faster visible results. If your topic is complex and comparison-heavy, GEO work — building depth and authority — matters more because you're competing to be woven into a synthesized answer, not just quoted once.

Most businesses need both, weighted differently depending on how people actually search for what they sell. Don't pick one and ignore the other based on which term sounds newer.

My working checklist

  • Map your content to short-answer questions (AEO) vs comparison/research questions (GEO)
  • Use schema and direct answers for AEO-focused pages
  • Build depth, original data, and citations for GEO-focused pages
  • Track both citation frequency and inclusion in longer AI-generated content
